Adhesives: Solvent VS. Water Based

Solvent based and water based adhesives are widely used in many industrial applications. Water based adhesives are also known as emulsion or dispersion adhesives. They are widely used in the graphic industry. They are a low-cost solution for both indoor and short-term outdoor graphic applications. Water based adhesives are used in a many versatile projects like exterior labels, wall graphics etc. These adhesives use water to separate their adhesive molecules. When the water evaporates, strong bonds are formed.

Solvent-based adhesive products are manufactured for applying in durable, demanding and long-term projects. The components of solvent based adhesives are combined with solvents, and when these solvents evaporate, a structurally stronger and more durable adhesive is left. This adhesive is more resistant to chemicals, wider temperature ranges and cleaning agents. An important attribute of the solvent based adhesive is the ability to use the “wet-application” method to apply graphics without the worry of adhesive losing the bond to substrate. This is because the solvent-based adhesives will not prevent the solvents from evaporating correctly when water is used in the wet-method.

Water based adhesives are better for short-term use and are more environmentally friendly purposes as they form bonds when the water inside evaporates. In the contrary, solvent-based adhesives form bonds when the solvents inside them evaporate. They are also more durable and chemical resistant than water based adhesives. It is always important to perform a test for the adhesives to ascertain its strength.
