Refrigerant is the generic name given for the chemical blend that cycles through an air conditioner. It changes from liquid to gas as it absorbs heat and later releases the heat outdoors. A refrigerant is a combination of different heat transfer fluids inside an air conditioning system. The purpose of refrigerant is the same irrespective of the kind of fluid you use. The refrigerant runs between the inside unit and outdoor unit of the air conditioner. It is the function of the evaporator coil inside the air conditioning system to evaporate the refrigerant so that the heat from the surrounding area can be absorbed. The refrigerant gas is evaporated to absorb thermal energy from the interior air. It will then move to the condenser unit outside to get converted back into a liquid and releases thermal energy outside of the home.
The biggest problem relating to a refrigerant is its leak. Air conditioners recycle refrigerant during its operation and so if a leak develops, the air conditioning unit will be drained of the fluid it needs to function. This will not only affect the efficiency of the system performance but can also lead to the system breakdown, if the leaks are not repaired for long. The leaks will drain the air conditioner of refrigerant and leads to the breakdown of the entire system. The refrigerant added during the initial charge of the air conditioning unit is expected to last for the entire life span of the air conditioner.
The low refrigerant level in the air conditioning system can cause several other problems like compressor to break down, evaporator coil freeze over etc. which will eventually lower the system output. Refrigerant usually moves between two sets of coils in the air conditioning system, one indoors and the other outdoors. The indoor coil is used by the refrigerant to absorb the heat from indoors and thereby cooling the air. The outdoor coil will be used to release the heat. The process then repeated continuously.
