Importance of Vent Hood Duct Insulation

Insulating your ductwork is the most efficient approach to prevent heat loss and noise while also increasing the effectiveness of your home’s heating and cooling system. However, homes sometimes ignore the significance of insulating other duct-based appliances, such as kitchen and bathroom exhaust systems. Consider the following points when deciding whether installing vent insulation on the ductwork used by your kitchen range vent hood is a good idea for your home.

Insulation for oven hood vents

Using a vent hood over your cooking range not only helps remove odors and nuisance smoke from your kitchen, but it also helps keep your family safe by removing carbon monoxide, natural gas odors, and other potentially harmful substances from the air around your cooktop. Filters are used in some range vent hoods to remove dangerous particulates and return the air to the kitchen. Vent hoods, which use a duct system to ventilate air straight out of the home, are more popular.

Around the range insulation hood ductwork

When the fan inside the vent hood is running, insulation around range hood ducts reduces nuisance noise and vibration, just like other duct systems in the home. But, more critically, insulating ductwork in unheated areas of the house will help reduce air loss through the thin metal ducts. Insulation can also assist prevent condensation from forming and the moisture problems that can arise because of it.

Materials to use for insulation

Thermal Ceramics, a global manufacturer of high temperature insulation products, has provided engineered solutions for heat containment problems for over 75 years and was the first to develop flexible fire resistive duct enclosures, marketed under the brand name of FireMaster, for commercial kitchen grease and air ventilation ducts.

Thermal Ceramics, unlike imitation wraps on the market today, offers the broadest range of performance testing, going beyond minimum laboratory listings or code requirements. This ensures fire containment without the need for speculating, from the most basic to the most complicated duct designs.

Here are some features of Morgan’s FireMaster:

  • High-temperature environment 1200°F (2192°F) solutions that are fire-safe
  • Commercial kitchen duct insulation that is UL listed
  • ASTM E2336 specifies 2-hour fire rated duct insulation and zero clearance protection for grease ducts.
  • Fire rated enclosure system
  • NFPA 96 (National Fire Protection Association) duct insulation regulations are followed.
  • UL Mold resistance and low/no VOCs are verified in the environment.
  • For easy handling and installation, it’s completely encased in strengthened aluminum facings.
  • Smoke and flame rating of less than 50/25 (ASTM E84)
  • Low bio-persistent fibers with a patent for easier handling
  • Fire wrap duct insulation with a thickness of 38 mm
  • Insulation for high temperatures
  • During in-service, do not age, become brittle, or shrink.
  • The FireMaster line can be trusted to hold the line in a fire after nearly 25 years of real-world and laboratory fire exposure.

When it comes to ductwork insulation, rigid fiberboard insulation is the best option. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions while installing the insulation. Seal all openings in your ductwork before insulating; insulating ductwork with unsealed openings is at best a futile exercise.

Other insulation points to consider

Insulation on your ductwork, like insulation in other components of your home, should be inspected and maintained on a regular basis. The effectiveness of the insulation around your vent hood ductwork will be harmed if it becomes waterlogged due to a roof leak or other problem. And if the insulation is not up to par, it might create a conducive environment for moisture to build up inside the ducts. At least once a year, inspect the insulation surrounding your ducts and replace any that has become degraded.
